The "Mommy, What is...?" books were created by author Nikki Sian-Leigh Aksamit after the loss of a child prompted her then four year old son to ask "Mommy, What is Dead?". "Mommy, What is Deaf?" was written to explain to her kids why their grandmother can't hear, "Mommy, What is Cancer?" to explain why the family dog died, "Mommy, What is Fat?" to explain why we should try to eat healthy foods and exercise and "Mommy, What is a Bully?" to address the epidemic of aggression kids face today. Books in the series currently under development include: "Mommy, What is Autism?", "Mommy, What is Pregnant?" and "Mommy, What is Dyslexia?". Realizing that these books filled a niche that desperately needed to be filled, Nikki decided to produce and distribute them as a non-profit organization. Thus, The Mommy, What is...? Project was born...

Through private and corporate funding, it is the goal of The "Mommy, What is...?" Project to produce and distribute the "Mommy, What is...?" books through schools, libraries and non-profit organizations all over North America.
